R12 Oracle EBS Instance Access

Our featured experts and success stories from almost all certification candidates have emphasized the need for hands-on practice on the Oracle E-Business Suite instance before writing the certification exam.

A few amongst us are already working on a R12 instance as part of an upgrade project or post-upgrade support. For the rest of us still working on R11i instances, there are several options for accessing and practising on a R12 Oracle EBS Instance.

  • Using a R12 EBS Vision Instance available FREE on public domain - A few Oracle partners are hosting R12 EBS Vision instance and providing free access. One Oracle Partner called Solution Beacon requires an active Oracle CSI (Customer Support Identification) Number - the same that one would use to register a My Oracle Support (formerly Metalink) account. Since this is a publicly available the environment may be refreshed on a periodic basis without notice. Also there are no guarantees regarding availability, performance or data retention. One gets only the application access including Sysadmin with the site level profile options in read only mode. There is no UNIX or database access. • Using a R12 EBS Vision Instance dedicated for your use for a fee - A few Oracle partners are hosting R12 EBS Vision instance dedicated solely for your use. One Oracle partner called Appshosting is providing this type of access for a monthly fee based on number of users. There is SSH/SCP shell access, along with complete access to database and Sysadmin. Application DBA support is provided as part of the package. For more details, click here

  • Using a R12 EBS Vision Instance pre-configured on a laptop sold to you - A few Oracle partners are configuring a R12 EBS Vision Instance on a laptop (or a server) and selling the package for your use. One such "R12 Laptop" is installed on a Dell PC with 120 GB HDD and includes R12 Vision Database, Oracle Workflow Builder, Oracle SQL Developer and Shell Scripting. For more details, click here

  • Install a R12 EBS Vision Instance on your own - This option is more for those who are Application DBAs and have previous experience in application installation, patching and maintenance. A couple of bloggers have shared their EBS R12 installation steps on the following links - Habib's tips and Malik's tips

In case you are aware of more options or Oracle partners other than the ones mentioned above, please add your comment to this blog post.

Meanwhile, if you are already using one of the above options, please share your experiences.

  2. There are no system requirements that I am aware of. What is your laptop configuration and browser you are using? Did you get any error message. Please send a screenshot to ocp.advisor@gmail.com and I'll investigate further.

  3. I can strongly recommend to have at least 3 GB.
I have R12 installed on 2GB system. I have problems with concurrent manager, which are related to memory shortage. When I run R12 I close all other applications.
If you want to deploy Discoverer you will have to install another Application server. It might require additional memory...
By and large the R12 installation process is not so complicated.
I am not a DBA. I have naver carried out such tasks. I followed all instructions. I followed all Pre-requisites from Installaion Guide.
Some problems occured. Google helped me to resolve them.
Moreover, you don't have to download R12. You can order the box of DVDs and CDs from edelivery. For me it was much faster and cheaper than to download it.

  4. You may get a login to an R12 Sandbox instance at www.oraclecontractors.com. This instance works quite well. I was able to set up and give a demo to a client on the advanced collections module and it won me three months of work.
